Light! Camera! Action! New York City was the place to be last week, because the 18th annual UrbanWorld Film Festival started off with a bang! Sponsored by BET and HBO, this year’s Urbanworld Film Festival screened over 70 films, including 12 world premieres.

The opening night kicked off  with the premiere of Relativity’s “Beyond The Light”, which was written and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and produced by Reggie Rock Bythewood, which is also known for creating some of our favorite movies like; “Love and Basketball” and “The Secret Life Of  Bees”. Special guest appearances were, Nate Parker and  Gugu Mbatha-Raw, which are the leading actors in the film of “Beyond The Lights”. Some celebrities in attendance, to show support for the films starting with, Lala Anthony, Malcom Lee( Director of  “Best Man Holidays”), Lisa Arrindell Anderson ( Madea’s Family reunion), Terrence Crawford (WBO lightweight Champion) and Naturi Naughton (Power).   After, each red carpet ended all the movie buffs, inspiring actors and celebs headed to the theaters to see the premieres of the films, as well as participating in the Q&A forum with the leading actors, directors and producers of all the films.

As I had a chance to observe the diversity of films that were included in the Urbanworld Film Festival, here are some of my favorites, that kept me at the edge of my seat and gave me a different insight on how we view the study of hip hop and what our perceptions are when it comes to the dangerous streets of foreign countries:
