The week of Martin Luther king Jr’s birthday, The Life Camp Organization; which was founded by leading national anti-violence activist Erica Ford, came together with other activists, celebrities and local government officials to celebrate the sixth annual NYC Peace Week. The purpose of Peace Week is to honorate the late Dr. Martin Luther king, Jr. by promoting the message of peace and togetherness through celebrations and remembrance of those who have died due to violence in New York.

Being an observer, and first time attendee to NYC’s Peace Week ‘s city town hall conference, that took place at Fordham University, has particularly opened my awareness to what many of us either don’t face on a daily basis or choose to ignore.  The privilege of sitting in a room with great activists working together, was truly an eye opening experience and helped me evaluate my views on giving back to my community, suffering families, and the youth who feel isolated and lost in this society.

Sponsored by Russell Simmons’s rush card company, the key note speakers that were in attendance were: Erica Ford,  Deepak Chopra, Spike Lee, Public Advocate letitia James, City Councilman Vanessa L. Gibson and a few other leading activist’s that have lost friends and family by violence. Many concerned parents and inspired youth took the first step of making a change and provided key points, ideas and suggestions that could promote peace. Expressed through love, compassion and sadness, here were some things that many of the town hall conference walked away with: Some peace shouldn’t only be a practice on certain holidays it should be a proactive action that everyone practices on a daily basis. Mentoring a person affected by negativity, joining a cause you believe in, and reaching out to local churches and officials to pitch ideas can also help spread peace. Baby steps in your local areas helps bring upon peace as did Life Camp.

Although I came in as a reporter to tune in to Peace Week, I left inspired and motivated, to reflect on how to be part of bigger picture, promotion of peace and exuberating love to others. In memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. please take a moment to self-reflect how you have helped create peace, give to others or by simply paying it forward.
